Primary Auto Liability
Required to keep your authority active. For interstate for-hire freight, the FMCSA minimum is $750,000 for trucks rated 10,001 lbs or more and $300,000 for lighter trucks. Many brokers and delivery contracts require $1,000,000.
Motor Truck Cargo
Covers the freight in your box. We set limits to what you haul, from general freight and furniture to appliances and electronics, and check the cargo terms your contracts require.
Physical Damage
Covers your box truck for collision, theft, fire and weather. Lenders and lease companies usually require it on a financed truck.
General Liability
Warehouses, retailers and delivery contracts often ask for general liability and a certificate naming them before you can start. We quote it with your truck policy.
Box Truck Rules to Know in Texas
USDOT and MC Authority
If you haul for pay across state lines with a truck rated 10,001 lbs or more, you need a USDOT number, and most for-hire freight also needs MC authority. Many box truck owners get their own authority to run load boards and delivery contracts.
TxDMV Number for In-State Loads
If your truck is rated over 26,000 lbs and runs loads that stay inside Texas, you also need a TxDMV number, with your insurer filing Form E with TxDMV. Household goods movers need a TxDMV number at any truck weight, with a $300,000 minimum for movers under 26,000 lbs.
CDL Requirements
Most box trucks are rated 26,000 lbs or less and can be driven without a CDL. A straight truck rated 26,001 lbs or more needs a Class B CDL. Your truck's rating affects which carriers will quote you, so include it with your quote.
Box Truck Freight Across Texas
Texas box truck work runs from last-mile and e-commerce delivery in the big metros to furniture, appliance and retail freight across I-35, I-10 and I-45. City traffic, frequent stops and dock work all affect how carriers price a box truck policy. Tell us your lanes and what you haul, and we will match you with carriers that write that work.
Hail Season Protection
One hailstorm can damage every truck and trailer in your yard at once, with a deductible on each unit. HailSafe parametric hail coverage pays a set amount when a measured hail trigger is met, to help cover those stacked deductibles. See weather coverage →

Texas Box Truck Insurance FAQs
Do I need commercial insurance for a box truck in Texas?+
Yes. A personal auto policy does not cover hauling freight for pay. If you run under your own authority, you need primary commercial auto liability on file, and most brokers and delivery contracts also require cargo coverage.
Can I get box truck insurance as a new authority?+
Yes. Several carriers write new box truck ventures, usually with a higher down payment for the first year. See our Texas new authority steps, then send your details and a licensed agent will shop it.
How fast can I get my filings done?+
Send your details through the quote form or call (888) 696-0035, and a licensed agent will follow up. Form E, MCS-90 and certificate filings can be completed the same day when you bind coverage that day and have all of your paperwork ready.
