Coverage for Texas Dump Truck Operations

Primary Auto Liability

The core of a dump truck policy. Loaded dump trucks are heavy and work around job sites and traffic, so many general contractors and municipalities require $1,000,000 or more, along with a certificate naming them.

Physical Damage

Covers your dump truck or trailer for collision, rollover, theft, fire and weather. Dump bodies and late-model trucks carry high values, and lenders usually require it.

General Liability

Job sites, quarries and contractors often require general liability before you can haul for them. We quote it with your truck policy so your certificates match.

Motor Truck Cargo

Sand, gravel and dirt are usually low value, so many dump haulers carry low cargo limits. Some contracts still require it, and higher-value loads like asphalt or equipment need more.

Dump Truck Rules to Know in Texas

USDOT Number and Authority

If you haul across state lines with a truck rated 10,001 lbs or more, you need a USDOT number. If you haul for pay across state lines, most for-hire work also needs MC authority.

TxDMV Number for In-State Work

Most dump work stays inside Texas. If your dump truck is rated over 26,000 lbs and runs inside Texas, you need a TxDMV number, with your insurer filing Form E with TxDMV. The minimum for most carriers over 26,000 lbs is $500,000 in liability.

CDL Requirements

Most single-axle, tandem and tri-axle dump trucks are rated 26,001 lbs or more and need at least a Class B CDL. Pulling a trailer rated over 10,000 lbs with that truck needs a Class A. Driver experience is one of the biggest factors in dump truck pricing.

Dump Truck Work Across Texas

Texas dump truck work runs from highway and subdivision construction around Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and Austin to quarry and aggregate hauls and oilfield pad and road work in the Permian. Short loaded runs, job site traffic and unpaved access roads all affect pricing. Tell us your work and your trucks, and we will match you with carriers that write it.

Hail Season Protection

One hailstorm can damage every truck and trailer in your yard at once, with a deductible on each unit. HailSafe parametric hail coverage pays a set amount when a measured hail trigger is met, to help cover those stacked deductibles. See weather coverage →

Texas Dump Truck Insurance FAQs

How much does dump truck insurance cost in Texas?+

It depends on your trucks, drivers, what you haul, how far you run and your claims history. Dump trucks are often priced higher than other straight trucks because of weight, job site exposure and rollover risk. We shop 10+ carriers to find the best rate for your setup.

Do I need cargo insurance for a dump truck?+

Not always. Many sand, gravel and dirt haulers carry low cargo limits because the material is low value. Check your contracts. Some contractors and brokers require cargo coverage, and higher-value loads like asphalt need more.

Can I insure a single dump truck as a new business?+

Yes. Several carriers write new dump truck operations, usually with a higher down payment for the first year and a closer look at driver experience. See our Texas new authority steps, then send your details.
