Primary Auto Liability
Required to keep your authority active. Most hotshot rigs are rated over 10,001 lbs, which puts them at the FMCSA $750,000 minimum for for-hire general freight. Many brokers require $1,000,000.
Motor Truck Cargo
Covers the freight on your trailer. Equipment, pipe and machinery loads can be high value, so we set cargo limits to what you actually haul.
Physical Damage
Covers your pickup and trailer for collision, theft, fire and weather. Lenders on a financed truck or trailer usually require it.
General Liability
Oilfield operators and job sites often ask for general liability and higher limits before you can work on location. We quote it with your truck policy.
Hotshot Rules to Know in Texas
USDOT and MC Authority
If you haul for pay across state lines with a truck or combination rated 10,001 lbs or more, you need a USDOT number, and most for-hire freight also needs MC authority.
TxDMV Number for In-State Loads
If your truck and trailer are rated over 26,000 lbs and you run loads that stay inside Texas, you also need a TxDMV number, with your insurer filing Form E with TxDMV. The minimum for most carriers over 26,000 lbs is $500,000 in liability.
CDL Requirements
A combination rated 26,001 lbs or more, with a trailer rated over 10,000 lbs, needs a Class A CDL. Many hotshot drivers run under that line without a CDL. Your setup affects which carriers will quote you, so tell us your truck and trailer ratings.
Hotshot Freight Across Texas
Texas hotshot work runs from Midland/Odessa and the Permian Basin to the Eagle Ford, Houston-area plants, and equipment and construction loads around Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio and Austin. Oilfield work, long empty miles and rough lease roads all affect how carriers price a hotshot policy. Tell us your lanes and what you haul, and we will match you with carriers that write that work.
Hail Season Protection
One hailstorm can damage every truck and trailer in your yard at once, with a deductible on each unit. HailSafe parametric hail coverage pays a set amount when a measured hail trigger is met, to help cover those stacked deductibles. See weather coverage →
More Texas Coverage
We also serve Midland/Odessa, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas/Fort Worth and all of Texas. Starting a new authority? See the Texas steps. Renewal coming up? Compare your renewal →
Texas Hotshot Insurance FAQs
Do hotshot truckers need commercial insurance?+
Yes. A personal auto policy does not cover hauling freight for pay. If you have your own authority, you need primary commercial auto liability on file with the FMCSA, and usually cargo and physical damage too.
How much liability does a Texas hotshot need?+
For interstate for-hire general freight with a rig rated 10,001 lbs or more, the FMCSA minimum is $750,000, and many brokers require $1,000,000. For loads inside Texas on rigs over 26,000 lbs, the TxDMV minimum is $500,000 for most carriers. Hazmat loads require more.
Can I get hotshot insurance as a new authority?+
Yes. Several carriers write new hotshot ventures, usually with a higher down payment for the first year. See our Texas new authority steps, then send your details and a licensed agent will shop it.
How fast can I get my filings done?+
Send your details through the quote form or call (888) 696-0035, and a licensed agent will follow up. Form E, MCS-90 and certificate filings can be completed the same day when you bind coverage that day and have all of your paperwork ready.
