Coverage for Colorado Owner-Operators

Primary Auto Liability

Required when you run under your own authority. For interstate for-hire general freight, the FMCSA minimum is $750,000, and many brokers require $1,000,000. We file your proof of insurance when you bind so your authority stays active.

Non-Trucking Liability (Bobtail)

For owner-operators leased to a motor carrier. Your carrier's policy covers you under dispatch, and non-trucking liability covers you when you drive off-dispatch for personal use. Many lease agreements require it.

Physical Damage

Covers your tractor and trailer for collision, theft, fire and weather, whether you run under your own authority or leased on. Lenders and lease-purchase programs usually require it.

Motor Truck Cargo

Covers the freight you haul under your own authority. Most brokers require at least $100,000, and higher-value freight needs more. We match your limits to what you haul.

Owner-Operator Rules to Know in Colorado

Own Authority or Leased On

Under your own authority, you carry your own primary liability, cargo and filings. Leased to a carrier, the carrier's policy covers you on dispatch, and you usually need non-trucking liability and physical damage. We quote both setups.

USDOT and MC Authority

If you haul for pay across state lines under your own authority with a truck rated 10,001 lbs or more, you need a USDOT number and MC authority, plus a BOC-3 on file.

Colorado PUC Permits

Most general freight owner-operators in Colorado do not need a separate state permit. Household goods movers, towing carriers and placarded hazmat carriers do need a Colorado PUC permit.

Owner-Operator Freight Across Colorado

Colorado owner-operators run Front Range freight on I-25 from Fort Collins to Pueblo, mountain hauls over I-70, and ag and energy loads out of Greeley and the Western Slope. Steep grades, chain laws, winter weather and hail make physical damage coverage matter. Tell us how you run and we will match you with carriers that write it.

Hail Season Protection

One hailstorm can damage every truck and trailer in your yard at once, with a deductible on each unit. HailSafe parametric hail coverage pays a set amount when a measured hail trigger is met, to help cover those stacked deductibles. See weather coverage →
