Primary Auto Liability
Required when you run under your own authority. For interstate for-hire general freight, the FMCSA minimum is $750,000, and many brokers require $1,000,000. We file your proof of insurance when you bind so your authority stays active.
Non-Trucking Liability (Bobtail)
For owner-operators leased to a motor carrier. Your carrier's policy covers you under dispatch, and non-trucking liability covers you when you drive off-dispatch for personal use. Many lease agreements require it.
Physical Damage
Covers your tractor and trailer for collision, theft, fire and weather, whether you run under your own authority or leased on. Lenders and lease-purchase programs usually require it.
Motor Truck Cargo
Covers the freight you haul under your own authority. Most brokers require at least $100,000, and higher-value freight needs more. We match your limits to what you haul.
Owner-Operator Rules to Know in Texas
Own Authority or Leased On
Under your own authority, you carry your own primary liability, cargo and filings. Leased to a carrier, the carrier's policy covers you on dispatch, and you usually need non-trucking liability and physical damage. We quote both setups.
USDOT and MC Authority
If you haul for pay across state lines under your own authority with a truck rated 10,001 lbs or more, you need a USDOT number and MC authority, plus a BOC-3 on file.
TxDMV Number for In-State Loads
If your truck is rated over 26,000 lbs and runs loads that stay inside Texas under your own authority, you also need a TxDMV number, with your insurer filing Form E with TxDMV. The minimum for most carriers over 26,000 lbs is $500,000 in liability.
Owner-Operator Freight Across Texas
Texas owner-operators run everything from Port of Houston drayage and Laredo cross-border freight to Permian Basin oilfield loads and dry van and reefer freight on I-35, I-10, I-20 and I-45. Long empty miles, heat and hail all matter when you insure your own truck. Tell us how you run and we will match you with carriers that write it.
Hail Season Protection
One hailstorm can damage every truck and trailer in your yard at once, with a deductible on each unit. HailSafe parametric hail coverage pays a set amount when a measured hail trigger is met, to help cover those stacked deductibles. See weather coverage →

We also serve Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, San Antonio, Laredo, Texas hotshot operators and all of Texas. Starting a new authority? See the Texas steps. Renewal coming up? Compare your renewal →
Texas Owner-Operator Insurance FAQs
How much is owner-operator truck insurance in Texas?+
It depends on whether you run under your own authority or leased on, your driving record, years of CDL experience, what you haul and how far. Running under your own authority costs more because you carry primary liability. We shop 10+ carriers to find your best rate.
What insurance do I need if I am leased to a carrier?+
Usually non-trucking liability (bobtail) and physical damage on your truck. Your carrier's policy covers primary liability while you are under dispatch. Check your lease agreement, since it lists the coverages and limits the carrier requires.
I want to go from leased on to my own authority. Can you help?+
Yes. We quote primary liability, cargo and physical damage for your new authority and handle the filings when you bind. See our Texas new authority steps to get started.
